New Players Start Here
Walking into a new group can feel a little intimidating. We get it. Maybe you have not played many board games before. Maybe you are worried everyone else already knows each other. Maybe you are not sure what kind of games we play, where to sit, who to talk to, or what happens when you arrive. That is exactly why this page exists.
Order of the Bear is a friendly community board game and tabletop hobby club in Rockwood, Ontario, built around one simple idea: games are better when people feel welcome at the table.
Our regular events are open to players ages 12 and up. On an average night, you might find a mix of high school students, university students, working professionals, tradespeople, office workers, parents, and retired folks all sitting down to play together.
You do not need to arrive with a group, know the rules in advance, or be an experienced gamer. When you come in, you can expect a relaxed, welcoming space where someone will help you find a table, explain what games are available, and connect you with people who are happy to teach and play.
You Do Not Need to Be an Expert
You do not need to know the rules ahead of time. You do not need to own a game. You do not need to bring a group with you. You do not need to be “good” at board games. New players are welcome here.
Many of our events include games that can be taught at the table. Some are quick and casual. Some are silly. Some are strategic. Some are big hobby games for players who like a deeper challenge.
The goal is not to impress anyone. The goal is to have fun, meet people, and enjoy the evening.
What Happens When You Arrive?
When you come to Order of the Bear for the first time, you can expect a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Here is the usual flow:
- Come in and say hello. Let someone know it is your first time.
- We will help you get settled. You do not have to figure everything out on your own.
- We can help match you with a game. Whether you want something light, social, quick, or more strategic, we will do our best to point you in the right direction.
- Rules can be explained. You are not expected to study before you arrive.
- You can participate at your own comfort level. Play a game, watch for a bit, ask questions, or just get a feel for the space.
There is no pressure to know everyone. There is no pressure to be loud. There is no pressure to jump into the biggest game in the room. Your first visit can be as simple as showing up, meeting a few people, and trying one game.
Coming Alone Is Completely Okay
A lot of people worry about showing up by themselves. That is normal.
Board game nights are actually one of the easiest ways to meet people because the game gives everyone something to focus on. You do not have to walk in with a perfect opening line or instantly become best friends with a room full of strangers.
You sit down, learn the game, take your turn, laugh at what happens, and little by little the awkwardness fades. That is the magic of tabletop games.
What Kind of Games Do We Play?
Order of the Bear includes a wide mix of board games, card games, tabletop games, role-playing games, and hobby events.
Light and Social Games
Great for new players, casual nights, quick laughs, and people who want something easy to learn.
Strategy Games
For players who enjoy deeper decisions, planning, clever moves, and longer table experiences.
Role-Playing Games
Story-driven games for people who enjoy characters, imagination, teamwork, and adventure.
Hobby and Special Events
Some events may include painting, modelling, featured games, community activities, or special programming.
You do not have to like every type of game. Most people do not. Part of the fun is discovering what kind of games you enjoy.
What Should You Bring?
For your first visit, you mostly just need to bring yourself.
You are welcome to bring a game you love, but you do not have to. We have access to a growing game library, and there are usually games available to play.
Bringing a water bottle is always a good idea, but we do have a small concession. Beyond that, just come ready to learn, laugh, and try something new.
Common First-Time Worries
“What if I do not know any games?”
That is completely fine. We can help you find something approachable.
“What if I am shy?”
You are not alone. A lot of tabletop gamers are quieter people at first. You can ease in at your own pace.
“What if I come alone?”
That is absolutely okay. Many people come to game nights because they want to meet people.
“What if I make a mistake?”
You will. We all do. That is part of learning games. Nobody expects perfection.
“What if I only like simple games?”
Great. Simple games are fun, and they are often the best way to start.
“What if I do not know anyone?”
That is one of the biggest reasons this page exists. We want new people to feel comfortable walking in.

Our Promise to New Players
We want Order of the Bear to feel like a place where people can belong.
That means new players matter. Casual players matter. Quiet people matter. Families, neighbours, hobbyists, strategy gamers, card players, roleplayers, painters, collectors, and curious first-timers all have a place here.
You do not have to prove anything to sit at the table. You just have to show up.
